Best Small Business Grants to Apply for in 2026
Small business grants are more competitive than ever in 2026, but the total pool of available funding has grown significantly. Federal agencies, state economic development offices, and private foundations collectively distribute tens of billions of dollars annually to qualifying businesses. Here are the programs most worth your time.
SBA Grant Programs
The U.S. Small Business Administration doesn't offer direct cash grants to most businesses, but it funds programs that do. The SBA Community Navigator Pilot Program funds local organizations that connect underserved small businesses to capital and technical assistance. The SBA Growth Accelerator Fund awards $50,000–$150,000 to accelerators and incubators that support small businesses in underserved markets.
The SBA also administers the State Trade Expansion Program (STEP), which reimburses small businesses for export-related expenses — trade show fees, translation services, and foreign market research. Awards typically range from $5,000 to $15,000 per business.
SBIR and STTR: Non-Dilutive R&D Funding
For businesses with a technology or research component, SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) and STTR (Small Business Technology Transfer) remain the largest sources of non-dilutive funding in the country. Phase I SBIR awards range from $150,000 to $275,000 depending on the agency. Phase II awards can reach $1–2 million.
Qualifying businesses must be U.S.-based, for-profit, majority U.S.-owned, and have fewer than 500 employees. The technology must align with one of 11 participating federal agencies' research priorities.
State and Local Grant Programs
Every state runs its own economic development grant programs, many of which are less competitive than federal programs because they're geographically restricted. Common categories include:
- Rural business grants — funded through USDA Rural Development, administered by state offices
- Workforce training grants — reimburse businesses for employee training costs
- Innovation and technology grants — targeted at startups and R&D-intensive businesses
- Minority and women-owned business grants — funded by state set-aside programs
Search your state's economic development agency website or browse available grants on GrantLocate filtered to your state.
Private Foundation and Corporate Grants
The FedEx Small Business Grant Contest awards up to $50,000 annually. Visa's She's Next program targets women-owned small businesses with $10,000 grants and mentorship. The NASE Growth Grants program awards up to $4,000 to self-employed individuals and micro-businesses.
Corporate grant programs typically have simpler applications than federal programs and faster award timelines — often 60–90 days from application to decision.
Tips for a Competitive Application
- Apply to programs where you meet every eligibility criterion — partial eligibility wastes everyone's time.
- Tailor each application to the funder's stated priorities; never submit a generic proposal.
- Start federal applications at least 30 days before the deadline to complete SAM.gov registration.
- Request reviewer feedback after a rejection — most federal agencies provide it on request.
The businesses that win grants consistently are the ones that treat grant-writing as an ongoing process, not a one-time event. Build a pipeline, track deadlines, and apply to multiple programs in parallel.
